What is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter Monitor is a device which records the electrical activity (ECG) of your heart, usually over a 24-hour period. The device itself is a small machine that can be worn on your waist band and is connected to electrodes placed on your chest.

Why has my doctor referred me for a Holter Monitor?

Your doctor may recommend a Holter Monitor for one or more of the following reasons:

• Fainting
• Dizziness
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Irregular heartbeat
• You may have had an ECG that showed a problem with your heart rhythm that needs to be further investigated.
• It has been determined that you need longer monitoring that a standard ECG to detect a possible irregularity.

What is involved in a Holter Monitor test?

• Connection of the device take approximately 20 minutes.
• If you experience any symptoms, you should press the event button on the machine, and make note of the symptoms in the diary which provided.

What happens after having a Holter Monitor?

• The results will be reported on by our specialist Cardiologists.
• If you are not currently under the care of a cardiologist, we will write to your referring doctor to advise of the results.
• If required, an appointment will be arranged with a cardiologist.
• Our specialists will work with you to develop an appropriate care plan for future management.
